How to cutting/grinding/polishing titanium alloy materials
- 1. Cutting titanium alloy
Rapid tool wear caused by cutting high temperature is the main problem in the cutting process of titanium alloy. The thermal conductivity of PCD diamond tools is several times that of cemented carbide. When processing titanium alloy, more cutting heat can be conducted out of the cutting area through the tool; the durability of PCD tools for cutting titanium alloy can reach dozens of times that of cemented carbide tools. Polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) tools are second; TiC-based cemented carbide tools and ceramic tools are considered not suitable for titanium alloy cutting due to low durability and other reasons.
In terms of pcd tool angle, a smaller rake angle is generally selected for cutting titanium alloys to increase the contact length between the chip and the rake face; at the same time, a larger clearance angle is selected to reduce the friction between the flank face and the machined surface.
- Grinding titanium alloy
Vitrified CBN grinding wheel, electroplated CBN grinding wheel and vacuum brazed CBN grinding wheel are recommended for grinding titanium alloy.
- The grinding ratio of titanium alloy processed by SiC grinding wheel under ordinary grinding conditions is only about 1. If the CBN grinding wheel is selected, the grinding ratio will be increased by dozens or even hundreds of times.
- Compared with ordinary abrasives, the thermal conductivity of superhard abrasives is significantly enhanced, so a higher material removal rate can be obtained.
- The use of CBN grinding wheel grinding titanium alloy can avoid frequent grinding wheel dressing, further improve the grinding efficiency.
- The surface quality of CBN grinding wheel is better than that of sic grinding wheel, its processing surface integrity is better, and the macro cracks and surface damage are relatively less; The CBN grinding wheel has better roughness than the sic grinding wheel, and the contrast.
- Polished titanium alloy
TC4 titanium alloy chemically reacts with oxygen and nitrogen oxygen under thermal deformation, and the reaction will produce oxide scale attached to the surface of the workpiece. The resin CBN sanding belt is particularly suitable for polishing iron-based alloys, titanium alloys, stainless steel, high-temperature alloys, ( Nickel-based and cobalt-based alloys) and other hard and tough materials and complex-shaped workpieces.
CBN sanding belt grinding titanium alloy, the grinding force is small, the grinding temperature is low, the grinding ratio is very high, and the grinding surface is basically, the compressive stress state, is the ideal grinding tool grinding titanium alloy.
Compared with ordinary coated abrasives, CBN sanding belt not only has the characteristics of high grinding efficiency, high durability, low grinding temperature, good surface quality and high cost performance, but also has the advantages of less dust, low noise and good working environment in the process of use. Using CBN sanding belt to grind the pure titanium plate and titanium alloy plate can reduce the surface roughness to about Ra= 0.03pm, and finally can achieve the mirror effect.
